Dead stock issues

A lot of companies were dealing with issues related to dead stock prior to Corona.

We have seen the burning of dead stock by Burberry as well as H&M, and probably many more. Dead stock was burned because there was no more use for it, or to help maintain the price premium – as was the case with Burberry. This is of course terrible, not only for the companies because it was a waste of money, but also for our environment. We produced it, so we should use it. Dead stock issues are exasperated by Corona, as we will not sell what we planned to sell, what we produced. This will result in a lot of excess stock.

Dead stock solutions

Given that we no longer have to / can follow the fashion calendar, we can simply shift sales to next year. We are no longer limited to specific collections or years. There is no reason to throw perfectly good clothes away. We have moved beyond the seasonal fashion calendar – so it’s time to use this new freedom, the freedom to launch whatever YOU want, whenever YOU want. Relaunch dead stock, it is really that simple.

Launch whatever YOU want, whenever YOU want.

How beautiful would it be – to create a collection from this year’s dead stock, combined with what you have planned and possibly already produced for 2021. Mix it into an eclectic, new collection, making small changes, to colours, embroidery and retouches, if needed, and bring the whole together.

"We have moved beyond the seasonal fashion calendar – so it’s time to use this new freedom, the freedom to launch whatever YOU want, whenever YOU want. Relaunch dead stock, it is really that simple."

The message is simple:

Get your old stock on the market again, if needed with some small retouches. Launch it as beautiful collection; there will be less waste and less environmental impact. Simple, nice and good. A real Corona solution.

Report from The Greenhouse Dead Stock Solutions Re-Stock / Re-Touch

Note This is one of the first video's made in the quarantine studio The Greenhouse. The quality and format were all "a 'improviste" - typical Corona lockdown.

Re-Stock / Re-Touch

Regarding the retouching of dead stock - I am sitting on an example of it. "The Flock Collection" A project from 1995, for ‘de Bijenkorf’, the most high-end department store in Holland. We made a selection of dead stock and re-touched it by flocking. We used this technique on the whole collection, chairs, mirror frames, cups – many different items. This finishing allowed the products to be re-sellable, back on store shelves in time for their anniversary. The project was award with "de Emmy van Leersum aanmoediging prijs"

Flocking creates a velvet touch – by gluing small hairs to an item, loading them with static, and drying it in the oven. It is the same technique used for many pencases or letters on football shirts.

"Re-Touch allowed "dead stock" to be re-sellable, back on store shelves in time for their anniversary."

Note:

This was done in a time before recyclability was a big concern – this technique makes products more difficult to recycle as it glues different materials together. But the principle remains: make your old stock re-sellable.
